When did you first start FPV racing?

Well, I've been FPV flying for more than three years. At first I just liked to hover and float around, but a few of us wanted something more daring, so we tossed around the idea of building cheap "basher" 450 sized quads and doing races.

Then in late 2012, the first minis arrived on the scene, designed by Blackout and Scotty from untestedprototype.com. Once we flew them we were hooked and we knew that we had found our racing quads - light, durable, and incredibly fun even in a small park.

What equipment are you currently using?

Like most pilots I have quite a few copters (we have coined the collective noun for multirotors as "an addiction").

For mini racing I fly a Coptergeist and a Minion. Both are great frames. I currently run 4S 6" setups with Naze32s, t-motors and Cleanflight.

For video I use 5.8 ImmersionRC gear, and custom modified Fatshark goggles, and Runcam FPV cameras.

Who are your favourite pilots?

David Windestål, the original RC Explorer, and Juz from Victoria were my two biggest muses in the early days and continue to be a source of inspiration. Boris B, Metal Danny and Charpu are all exceptional pilots as well.

Closer to home, I'm lucky enough to fly with a whole bunch of awesome guys, including Chad aka Finalglide (although I won't mention him too much or he'll get a big head) and Soma aka Mr Warpquad.

Flits is another Brisbane local. He keeps a low profile, but is an awesome pilot, and always pushing the limits. Fans of any of the above should definitely check out his YouTube channel. You may notice some tricks being performed that have since gone quite mainstream.

Rianrex and Vegetoast have always impressed. Would love to fly with those guys too.

What advice would you give to beginners who want to fly like you?

Take it slow. There's an enormous learning curve, not just with flying, but with building and tuning. Learn your limits, but then push them all the time, in a way that's safe and won't cause you lots of grief. Seek out advice, this community is young and vibrant and full of helpful people. And enjoy the hell out of it.

What is your favourite place to race?

Australia is my playground! Seriously though, Brisbane has such an enormous amount of open green space. I have my favourite parks (and car parks) but anything with a nice mixture of open flowing areas and tighter proximity works for me.

Who would you most like to race against?

I'd love to hook up with Juz and co sometime, as well as the European guys. Charpu too, but I suspect I wouldn't stand a chance (on the plus side, flying with Chad all the time has prepared me for how that feels).

Is there anything else you’d like to say about FPV racing?

Keep it fun. Do it safely, so the fun police can't get in and ruin it. There is an enormous amount of potential at this point in time so it's very exciting to be on the crest of the wave. Once it crashes I suspect some of the fun will go out of it, but for now FPV flying is having its Renaissance so let's get out there and fly!
